Windmills..

Today's distance: 73km (46 Miles)

We had a great stay at the "De Luthiers" B&B the last two nights in Dordrecht. Lucienne and Wout were great hosts who made us feel at home. Definitely will stay there the next time we come back to visit the museums we missed on this trip.

We headed out to go tour the Grote Kerk (Big Church) which opened at 10:30. It was another beautiful day out there. Definitely been lucky on our trip so far (knock, knock,..). We were the first visitors in the church and climbed the tower to the top to take a few pics. It took 275 narrow, winding steps to get to get there and a magnificent view in all directions. The construction of the church was started in the middle of the 14th century, but not finished until 1626. It was supposed to have been another 105ft higher, but they ran out of money. We were glad not to have climbed more steps! They were able to afford having the biggest clock bell in Holland weighing 22,000 lbs of solid brass. We also found an old bible in a display case that was very similar to the one we have in N. Carolina. This one was printed in 1715, while ours is dated from 1686. I need to do more research when we get back..

Took the ferry from Dordrecht over to Papendrecht and pointed our bikes towards Rotterdam. We met a very nice elderly lady on the ferry who wanted to know more on where we had been and where we were going. We made a slight detour to ride along the Kinderdijk where they have the largest concentration of windmills in Holland. Warning, you may get an overdose with the pics and video below... It was such a beautiful day for taking some.

We rode a lot more in the cities with a lot of traffic as we went through parts of Rotterdam and Den Haag. Stopped for a mid afternoon snack in Delft which had an unusually large number of tourists for a Tuesday in September. I guess the whole Vermeer and "Girl with the pearl earring" rage caused that. Pretty town, but too touristy for us..

We stopped at a hotel in Wassenaar for the evening. We both felt tired today. Think it was more due to more traffic on the road. Goodnight..
