Overijssel and a visit to our old home..

Today's distance: 72km (45 Miles)

Enjoyed our short walk and dinner last night in the only restaurant in the village. The owner of the B&B called it "old school" Dutch cuisine, but it was just fine for us. The quality so far of all the food we have had has been very good. We also have like not being rushed..

The plan for today mirrored that of yesterday in that we would take the Bingo route technique using the numbers. We are probably a couple days behind our original schedule of getting to Amsterdam, but we figured that we should take advantage of the good weather here while it lasted before taking the train to south of France.

The route left Drenthe and entered the next province, Overijssel. We took a short detour off the route to visit the house my family and I lived last while in Holland, in a village called Beerzerveld. It was our favorite place because of the surrounding farm lands and the house itself was really nice and big. We even had our own private moat. We rode past what was once the caretakers house and someone on the patio waved enthusiastically to us. We stopped and talked to him for a while, mentioning that we knew the fam. De Wilde that used to live there. He is the new owner of the caretakers house and was amazed to hear that we lived in "Old Ambt" forty years ago.

We made a short ride down the driveway of our old home, before two rather large dogs came running over the bridge barking at us. We figured that we should probably head back since this was private property. Luckily they were not Rottweilers like we had when we lived there! The house and yards looked to be in very good condition.

We got back on our "Bingo" route and headed towards the town of Ommen where we found a nice hotel to stay for the night. Negotiated a special deal that included dinner, breakfast, and drinks. Yahoo!

Again, this is really not the actual route. Just where started and where we stopped today.
Our Bingo route card for the day..
Morning view from the back window at our B&B. It was cool and slightly misty, but turned into another fabulous sunny day!
Route leaving the B&B
Several Dutch out fishing in the canal. The traditional fishing pole is about 25ft long with a very thin line and pencil bobber tied at the end.
Forest and farm fields for today.
If I could only get our lawn to look this good!
Riding into one of the villages in Overijssel
The barns here use more oak planks and braided thatch on the sides.
Always beautifully manicured gardens with the farm homes.
Looked like a great place to stop for lunch but we had already packed cheese sandwiches.
Which we enjoyed on a picnic table not too far down the path.
Heard a group of kids laughing while we were having lunch. Must be a "Gee, it is Friday and sunny so let's take the kids out of the classroom for a bike ride" day!
The yellow bicycle caterpillar going down the bike path.
Beautiful gardens. I'll have to have a word with Harry & Trapper, our landscape "designers".
Old well and way to get the water out.
The driveway to our old home.
Linda riding along the moat.
The main house.
The Old Ambt farm that was at one time part of the house.
